The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has
strengthened its precautions in the labeling of OxyContin Tablets,
including issuing their strongest warning – a Black Box Warning.
In 2002, a study of American students found
OxyContin abuse beginning as early as the eighth grade.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has
found the highest rates of abuse in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia
and Pennsylvania.
At least 1,000 deaths per year are due to
OxyContin abuse.
The DEA is requesting that family physicians and
non-specialists be banned from prescribing the drug.
In August of 2001, Purdue Pharma announced their
blueprint for a “smart pill” that would be harder to abuse than
OxyContin. At that time, the timeframe for the smart pill’s
availability was in the three to five year range.
